Preparing One's Condo for Fall and Winter

It is now halfway through September, and the leaves have begun to change. A slight crisp edge licks the air; fall is at our doorstep.

If you are an urban loft or condo owner and have the (mis?)fortune to live in an area with heavy snowfall, the time is right to begin preparing your home for the winter months. True enough- shoveling and scraping ice off one's roof are a thing of the past for you. But there are still methods to embrace which with a little time and effort will improve your home life (and lower your bills) drastically.

Make sure that your fans are spinning the right way! This is what's referred to as a "life hack." When your fans are spinning counter-clockwise, they're pulling the warm air up; that's best for the warm months, when you want to be cool. Now that the temperature is dropping, you'll want the opposite- alter your fan so that it's now spinning clockwise, pushing warm air down, and your guests will thank you!

Wind-proof your windows. As easy as #1, this will net you similar returns on a very easy step to take. Go window to window, door to door, and ensure that there are no drafts. For smaller issues, look into a caulking gun or possibly a window-sealent kit at Home Depot or a similar store. For larger drafts, contact a professional via Urban100 or a similar service.

Prepare your deck, patio etc. This is an easy one to forget, because in the colder months your time spent lounging outside on a patio is going to plummet. Ignoring this aspect of condo preparation would be a mistake, though. Invest in a simple shovel to clear your property with, or you risk water sitting and seeping into your home. On that note, ensure that any doorways leading outside are well sealed and prepared, too!

Stock up. No, not on survival-ready kits in case you're locked in your home for weeks on end due to heavy snowfall and torrentially strong wind; we're talking about the fun stuff. Get some hot cocoa mix, some marshmallows, graham crackers and possibly some chocolate- you know what we're talkin' about! Winter is meant to be enjoyed and embraced!

Finally, embrace the winter months as an opportunity to meet your neighbors. It's all too easy to get caught up in the bustle of day to day life and neglect to make these connections. Don't make that mistake- chances are, you have similar interests and enjoy similar activities. Watch a movie, cook a meal or just have a conversation- it's what winter's best for!
