Four Misconceptions About The Condo Life

If you have never lived in a condo, or had friends or family who lived in condos, then you may not be completely familiars with what condos are, and what they are not. Indeed, there are many misconceptions about condos floating around out there, so I figured I would use this article to clarify four of those condo (and condo life) misconceptions.

1. I have to be retired.
Or, I have to be a young professional. While people who fit into these categories often live in condos (retirees want to downsize; young professionals want to be near work), the reality is that condo buildings are home to all manner of people. Just as you find in single-family home neighborhoods, condo buildings generally contain a diverse mix of people.

2. I will not have any room. As with other types of homes, condos come in all shapes and sizes. Certainly, there are small studio or one-bedroom condos that require you to use all of your available space carefully. But on the other hand, you can get condos that take up all, or a big part, of the top floor of a condo building. While such an elaborate condo may cost more than you are willing to pay, they are available.

3. It will be super noisy. Most condos are built in urban areas, so you have to expect some noise, whether that is from cars or conversations. But it is not like they will be right in your ear. Condos are well insulated, and if you have quality windows, you may hear very little of what is going on outside. That is especially true the higher in the building you live.

4. I will not have much freedom. There are a couple of ways to look at this. And let me emphasize I am not talking about the freedom to go on vacation and things like that. (Condo owners can do a lot of that because they have a very small maintenance list compared to people who live in single-family homes.) Many people think since they live in a building with a bunch of other people that they cannot paint their walls and things like that. Nothing could be further from the truth. Within reason (or whatever your condo homeowners association says is within reason), you can do just about anything you want. Paint? Sure. Replace the floor? Go ahead. You have plenty of options as a condo owner.
